I know that this is not a hardware issue. I can boot into XP on my secondary drive and use the unit flawlessly. I have tried ALL alternative firewire drivers in Windows including the LEGACY driver. It does NOT fix my problem. I have been working on this for four days now to no avail. Some users may experience some difficulties, such as loss of connection or drop outs, when using the default FireWire driver in Windows 7. In order to resolve this, you may need to switch to the "Legacy" driver that Microsoft provides. Its a windows 7 issue, and forums are filled with EVERY USB to Firewire not working because the driver fails. It will work on older versions of Windows but not Windows 7. This seems to be the case for standard firewire as well. Windows should have an update to fix this by now, but they don't seem to care.
